Isaac Hayes, The Black Moses

The Moses of Soul music is no more. He left us This Monday, August 10, 2008 at the age of 65 (20 August 1942/10 August 2008).


Isaac's parents died during his childhood are his grandparents who raised him. He began singing at age 5 and taught himself to play piano, organ and saxophone. He moved to Memphis to play in the club circuit in the city. He was a member of various groups, including Sir Isaac & The Doo-Dads, the Teen Tones and Sir Calvin and His Swinging Cats.

In 1962 he began recording songs for various local labels.

In 1964, he signed with the famous Stax label records. Isaac is working with the saxophonist Mar-Keys, Floyd Newman and replaced from time to time Booker T. Jones.

After playing a few sessions for Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and David Porter joined forces with the duo gave birth to the success of Sam & Dave such as Hold On I'm Comin, Soul Man and When Something Is Wrong With My Baby. They wrote the song BABY for Carla Thomas, and arrangements of I Had A Dream and I Gotta Love Somebody's Baby by Johnnie Taylor. Isaac Hayes and David Porter formed the group Soul Children to serve as a medium for their quality of songwriting.

In 1967, Isaac Hayes relaunch his career with album Presenting Isaac Hayes. Hot Buttered Soul followed two years later. The Isaac Hayes Movement and To Be Continued followed in 1970, Black Moses in 1971. The film also went Shaft lablaxploitation this year, the title track became a huge hit in both charts Pop and R & B this year, reaching the No. 1 spot. This song was later used by Eddy And The Soul Band in 1985 and reached 13th place in the UK charts. Other movie soundtracks followed in the genre of Tough Guys and Truck Turner in 1973 in 1974.

Isaac Hayes left Stax Records in 1975 after disputes over royalties, and set up his own label, Hot Buttered Soul, and went bankrupt the following year. He signed with Polydor and Spring. In 1977 the double album A Man and a Woman, recorded with Dionne Warwick, showed a restart of his career. In 1979 a collection of duets with Millie Jackson Royal Rappin's appointment went. It also produces the album Here's My Love Linda Clifford for the artist that year. Isaac Hayes left a pair of solo albums in 1980 with And Once Again and 1981 with Lifetime Thing. The same year he made an appearance in the film by John Carpenter, New York 1997, taking the role of "Duke of New York."

Musically, he made a break for five years before reappearing at the front of the stage with Ike's Rap, a single that made the Top 10 U.S. R & B, from the album U Turn. He gives it two after with Love Attack before putting music aside to concentrate on his acting career.

In 1995, Isaac Hayes converted to Scientology. He released two albums that year Branded and instrumental Raw and Refined. Under the official name Nene Katey Ocansey I, he served the royal family of Ghana.

In 1997, he agreed to double the voice of Chef in the animated television series South Park. He left the series in 2005 following the conflict between the producers about Scientology, having participated in 9 seasons.

In 2000, 29 years after the release of Shaft, Isaac Hayes reworked on a new version of the original with the release of a new episode of Shaft. The film revolves around the detective, played by Samuel L. Jackson takes over the role formerly held by Richard Roundtree. In 2001, he supported Alicia Keys as a musician and arranger on her debut album Songs in A Minor.

In 2005, he played the role as a guest of a Jaffa in the television series Stargate SG-1.

The great Isaac Hayes died August 10, 2008 at the age of 65 at his home in Memphis, Tennessee due to heart problems.
